It is known as the “Warm Heart of Africa.” This part of Africa is very primitive and gorgeous, and it has become a favorite place for volunteer projects and an ideal location if you are seeking out local experiences including hiking exploration. There is a lot you can enjoy, and some are things you never know or think you will get to enjoy. This is why many people find a reason to extend their stay or even go back to continue having fun and learning more.
It is important to remember that the country has a high level of poverty and you will often see malnourished kids looking for food or homeless people in the bush. Despite the fact that many of Malawians live below the poverty line, it is a safe place to travel, and it is known as the “Warm Heart of Africa” for a reason; the locals are very friendly.
There are different places you can visit when in Malawi. Some of the common areas are Nkhata Bay, Lilongwe, Kande Beach, Mzuzu, Cape MacClear and Monkey Bay, Chitimba Camp, etc. These places are popular with backpackers, and you will be able to meet new friends visiting Malawi. What can you do in Malawi?
Horse Riding
This will be the best two hours of your life. You are first introduced to horses by friendly guides in the beautiful ranch before you can start riding through the forest and local villages before arriving on the beach. When you are finished, they take off the saddle, and you get a chance to go for a swim with a horse �” a unique and amazing experience.
Canoeing in Nkhata Bay
It is incredibly cheap, and the boats are available whenever you need them. You get the canoe to explore, make a stop at the beach and bask in the still waters of the lake. Nkhata Bay will provide you with the perfect chance of kayaking, and the good thing is you do it when you want and for as long as you want. You can also do this at Kande Beach.
Scuba Diving in Cape Mac Clear
This is the best place to go scuba diving when in Malawi. If this is your thing,freshwater fish of Malawi then you will get to do it as much as you want. You will be able to get an entirely different experience than that of the ocean. There are some freshwater fish to check out and some wreckages in the lake. The visibility is not that great when compared to the red sea or Zanzibar, but that doesn’t mean you don’t get to have fun.
Hiking from Chitimba to Livingstonia
You can spend the night in Livingstonia, but spending it in Chitimba will be far much better because it gives you the incentive to hike up the mountain. There are local guides from the village who will show you the way, or you can decide to do it on your own. There will be boys ready to help you in case you get lost. It is a good idea to start hiking early in the morning to avoid the midday heat. You will get a beautiful view of the lake and the Livingstonia Mission when you reach the top.
Meet the Local on a Village Walk
You get the chance to take a day tour to the villages and learn the local way of life, check out a school, or even meet a witch doctor. Since Malawians are very friendly, you will have an easier time taking the village walk. You will learn their culture firsthand and learn something new every day.
Visiting the Local Flea Markets
There is a lot of cheap things you can expect to find at the local flea market. You will see second-hand clothes, headphones, vegetables, etc. The markets are full of products and fresh produce you can use for cooking. You will meet the locals and support their business.
Learn to cook like a Local
The locals have different types of food you can learn to cook. The standard meal is rice and beans, but there are other meals they eat from time to time. You can learn to fry chicken the Malawian way.
Woodcarving Lessons
Malawi has some creative wood crafters, and you can learn a little from them. You can buy wood carvings and souvenirs at a low price. Many shopkeepers will encourage you to go back and find out more about their trade.
Backpacking to Malawi is a  good idea, and you don’t have to spend a lot of money to have fun. Accommodation is not as cheap as you might think, but you can expect to pay 30 dollars. Taking a minibus is way cheaper than a taxi. If you want to get cheap food, avoid going to western restaurants chains and go to local joints. You will be able to keep your costs down and enjoy the local cuisines.
